WHY?
Research shows people often decide if they like a church within the first 10-15 minutes of visiting.
You might be the first face a brand-new guest will see. So a warm welcome makes an important first impression. At Compass, “people are our priority.” Everyone wears a name tag every week to make it easy for newcomers to connect and they help us remember names before and after the service. This especially helps us include second and third time guests whose faces we recognize, but names we forgot. Name tags help remove barriers to connection and contribute to people feeling they are known and belong here.
Role
- Arrive at 10:30am. Join the pre-service Prayer meeting at 10:35am in the Worship Center.
- Pull out clipboards (2), refill with name tags (at least 50 tags), & sharpies (2) from the hospitality cart.
- Have one name tagger walk around and write name tags for the worship team, set-up team, hospitality team and any early people, then wait with the other name-tagger in front of the Worship Center (upstairs) for guests to arrive. Please both be at this outside station by the end of the prayer meeting.
- Feel free to chat but as people arrive, pause your conversation & catch up another time.
- Warmly welcome them saying: “Hello” “Good morning” “Good to see you” “Glad you are here!”
- Ask for their first name and write it legibly. When in doubt ask, “How do you spell that?”
- If you can tell they haven’t been here before & have time, say, “Let me show you inside and introduce you to ___” and then connect them with someone inside and point them to the snacks and coffee.
- At 11AM, choose one name tagger to wait outside the Worship Center until 11:15am (for the late comers).
- Before heading in, leave the remaining name tags & markers on the table and set up the sign that says “Glad you are here! Please help yourself to a nametag and program” (for the late late comers).
