Parent & Child Dedication

Parenting is one of the greatest privileges and responsibilities in life. God has entrusted you with the care of one his is precious creations.
Parent and Child dedication is a way for the parents of Compass to declare, before God and His church, their desire to raise their kids in, “…the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4

Like a good guide, Christian parents are responsible for modeling and teaching their children to love God wholeheartedly in four ways.
1. Know The Way - Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. Deuteronomy 6:4

The first step toward leading your children is knowing the way yourself. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

Faithful parents unapologetically point their kids to Jesus as the only way to be saved. But, it’s not enough just to know the path, you must walk it yourself.
2. Go The Way - And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Deuteronomy 6:5-6

You cannot take someone where you have not yet traveled yourself. What your kids see in your life matters much more than what you say. If you want your kids to love God with everything they are, you must first. You will not be perfect, so when you do mess up, clean up and invite your kids on the journey of growth with you.

3. Show The Way - Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. Deuteronomy 6:7–9

As a church, we want to partner with you in teaching your kids about God, but that is primarily your job.
Find as many creative ways as you can to get God’s truth into your kids' lives. Repetition is the key to learning. Don’t just talk about God on Sunday, talk about him all day, everyday! Saturate your home with scripture. Solomon said, "Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it." Proverbs 22:6

Proverbs are not promises, but they are how life generally works. The word direct literally means to "train up or to dedicate."

Parent and child dedication involves asking God to help you point your kids to the only right path, and praying that God will keep them on that path.

The church also has a role to play as a spiritual family. As older brothers and sisters in Christ, we can play our part in investing in the next generation, like the Psalmist who said, "Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me." Psalm 71:18
4. Let Them Fly - Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him. Children born to a young man are like arrows in a warrior’s hands. How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them!  Psalm 127:3–5

Children are gift from God. You have stewardship over them, but ultimately, they belong to God. Arrows stay in the quiver for a while but they are made to fly!

Your goal as a parent is to train your children the best you can, aim them in the right direction and when the time is right, launch them out to make impact.

Part of dedicating your kids to Christ is the commitment to freeing your kids up to go anywhere and do anything that God wants them to do for His glory. Place your kids in God’s hands and dedicate their future to him.
